I'm writing to share my experience preparing my older daughter for the arrival of her younger brother. My daughter, who was a year and a half old at the time, initially showed little interest in the pregnancy. Despite her apparent lack of enthusiasm, I consistently and patiently shared the news and explained what it meant to become a big sister throughout my pregnancy. Even during our maternity photoshoot, her reaction remained subdued. It wasn't until she saw her brother in my arms that the reality of the situation truly registered, and some sibling rivalry emerged.

Based on this experience, I offer the following suggestions for preparing your child for a new sibling:

1. **Maximize quality time: ** Dedicate significant time to your older child throughout your pregnancy. Strengthen your bond and create cherished memories before the baby's arrival.

2. **Consistent communication is key: ** Repeatedly explain the upcoming changes, even if your child seems uninterested or dismissive. Persistence is crucial in helping them understand and adapt.

3. **Prioritize balanced attention: ** When the baby arrives, strive to provide equal attention to both children, even though this can be challenging with a newborn's demands. Utilize moments when the baby is sleeping for focused one-on-one time with your older child.

The transition to a larger family is undoubtedly demanding, but remember that it's a journey, not a race. Self-care is paramount, and accepting assistance from others when offered will help you navigate this period effectively. Your children will understand and feel your love, regardless of the challenges.
