Lupus Fighter: On the Road to Recovery

I got diagnosed with Lupus the summer of 1991. While in summer school, one morning I woke up to so much pain. My whole body was hurting I couldn’t get out of bed. My mom called the doctor office made my appointment to see the doctor. It took about two weeks to get in the office, meanwhile I was getting more ill, so my mom took me to the emergency room. They sent me home said I had a UTI and prescribed antibiotics and pain meds. That help for about a week then the pain returned. When I went  to the doctor office, the doctor only prescribed some acid reflux meds and pain meds. I went home feeling worst then I ever that night. My mom take me back to the ER, and they admitted me for a day to stop the pain and throwing up. I went home for about a week then my mom called another doctor. I went to the new doctor, he was puzzled about my test results from the other doctor and ER. He did a lot of testing, but he still came up with nothing. He scheduled me an appointment Rheumatologist to see me. I had to wait to get to see the doctor  about a month I was getting sicker. I was losing weight, skin discoloring, body aches, and vomiting. My mom just was taking me back and forth the ER. Finally the day came to see the rheumatologist. I went to see the doctor he told my mom the think it was lupus, but he will have to run some test to confirm that. He was correct it was lupus. He told her that’s what it was, and I needed to get started on the medication. My body was so damaged due to me taking all the wrong medications. He started me with naproxen’s and vitamins first. I couldn’t keep the medication down, so my mom took me back to the ER, and they admitted me into ICU.

I started my lupus treatment, and I stayed in the hospital for about two months. I missed the first six months of my senior year of high school, and I had to work very hard to catch up. I graduated in 1997, and I was on the road to recovery.  Five years later,  my body started hurting and my organs weren’t doing good, so I was hospitalized for about two week.

Then in 2015, lupus almost took my life, and I had to be transported to a hospital in Birmingham. I was admitted for about six months. I had to retire from the State of Alabama after 15 years due to being so ill. Every since then, I have been battling with lupus hard. I been in and out of the hospital and going to different doctors. Just this year I've had two hips replacement. Hopefully I will be on the road to recovery very soon.
