My daughter had a meeting at Auburn University and asked me to tag along. Since I had plenty of time to spare, I decided to finally try Another Broken Egg Café. I’ve seen so many people posting about them on social media, and I wanted to see if it was really as good as everyone claims. And you know me, I’m never biased. I’m going to give you my exact experience.
When I walked in, the place was busy and loud. My anxiety kicked in fast, so I was relieved to see they offered outdoor seating. I asked the host if I could sit outside, and she was very kind and accommodating. It took my waitress a few minutes to come over, which was fine because it gave me time to look over the menu. They had several new seasonal items that caught my eye.
My waitress, Emma S., deserves her own paragraph. Before I even get into the food, I have to say she was an absolute sweetheart, kind, attentive, and exactly what a great waitress should be. She took my drink and food order right away and made sure I had everything I needed throughout my visit.
I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and the Chicken & Waffles. Emma quickly brought my drinks, and the food arrived in about 10–15 minutes. The weather was nice, the wind was blowing, and rain was on the way, so the wait didn’t bother me at all. I finished my drink and water and asked for a refill, and again, Emma was amazing, she got right on it with a smile.
I started with the Shrimp & Grits ($17.99). I’m not used to seeing shrimp and grits presented this way, but the dish was beautiful and piping hot. It came with shrimp and sausage sautéed with red peppers and onions in a spicy reduction over creamy grits. It definitely has heat, so if you don’t like spice, this isn’t for you. I loved the addition of garlic bread and lemon, the bread helped tone down the spice perfectly. Every bite was cheesy and flavorful. The bread was the perfect texture, not too hard or too soft. The portion was huge, and I couldn’t finish it, so I took the rest home. I would absolutely order this again.
Next was the Chicken & Waffles. The presentation was beautiful, and both the chicken and waffles were hot. The chicken was crispy, but it lacked seasoning. The waffles were fluffy with slightly crisp edges, which I loved.
My total came out to a Whoopen balance of $38.59, which I felt was fair considering the portion sizes, the quality, and the great service I received.
Overall, I’d give my experience a 4.6/5. The chicken needed more seasoning, and I wish the Shrimp & Grits came with more of that delicious garlic bread. They also charge convivence fee to use a card ($1.12). But those are small things. I would definitely visit again. The food was hot, the service was great, and Emma S. made the experience even better. I truly appreciate her welcoming attitude and kindness.
