Preparing For Your Maternity Session

It’s an exciting time for all moms to be. There is so much to prepare before the arrival of their bundle of joy. One of the most anticipated things is taking maternity photos.

Like all other special events in a woman’s life, they want everything to be perfect and fall into place. Sometimes things may not go the way you plan.  My best advice is to have a good attitude. If you come in a horrible mood, it sets the tone for you, the photographer, and the whole photo session. As a photographer I am sure it’s not fun or productive when someone comes into the studio with a bad attitude.

Book Early! Scheduling way in advance gives you the opportunity to not have to rush. Most make-up artists, hair stylists, and photographers book way in advance, and to not deal with the headache of not finding someone can become frustrating. Especially when most times, deposits are nonrefundable.

Selecting your photographer: Most photographers as I have a certain way, we do our photos. I love to edit my clients, but I still want them to look like their natural selves. Give them a little enhancement to maybe remove some blemishes or spots if they request.  When selecting the right person for you, be sure you look at their work. You don’t want to select someone because of their pricing and expect to get the outcome of another photographer.  Check out their photos on social media and websites to give you an idea of what your photos will look like. The best route is to have good communication with the photographer you select or read the information off their site they have provided.

When choosing your makeup artist, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. I am not a professional or expert when it comes to makeup, but I can tell when it’s not “what it should be given”.  Do they have the foundation that matches your skin tone? I have witnessed where many only have a few colors of foundations, and even if it doesn't match the client, they apply it anyways.   Will they be able to cover the neckline?  When I was pregnant my neck was two shades darker than my face.  Be sure to ask them all the questions concerning skin problems and skin pigmentation. If you sweat a lot, make sure you also mention that.  I once witnessed a client that was very upset because the make-up made her look totally different, she had another skin tone on her face, and her makeup was beginning to look really runny.  Eyelashes are very popular, and one of the many errors, I see. I am not sure if the make-up artist or the client selects the size of the lashes or the client, but sometimes when the ladies are not used to them, it makes them struggle to keep their eyes open. I have also seen where they look like their eyes are close.  You want to make sure you are use them before your photos, or to think about not getting them so heavy or too long. Are they reliable? I have had several clients, make-up artists cancel on them at the last minute. Be sure to always have a backup plan. Make sure you give yourself enough time after you have your face done to make it on time to your photoshoot. If he/she gives you an approximate time it takes for them to do your face, be sure to put 2 to 3 hours in between your session. I have had many clients that had to pay late fees, because they cut the time short in between.

I have been asked plenty of times how the mom should wear their hair. The only answer I can give you, is it depends on what look you are going for or what is your theme.  I am also not an expert on hair. Lol

The biggest thing is what to wear. As you see many of my clients choose to show their skin or wear a long dress but remember what works for someone may not work for you.  One thing you don’t want to do is order your wardrobe close to your session date and not have the time to see how everything looks and fits before your photos. I suggest asking your photographers if they provide wardrobe choices, because that can help eliminate the struggle and hassle of finding you something to wear.

You can never get the memories back, so no matter how you don’t feel like doing it, be sure to not miss out on capturing these special moments. Please be sure to have fun and have a positive attitude. There is no such thing as preparing to early for your photo session. I am always opened to answer any question from my clients and customers when they book their session.
