My golden retriever and I developed a deep love for each other as children. I had no desire to own a pet after Max passed away. I refrained from becoming attached to my dad's new dogs. Now that I'm an adult, let me tell you that I admire my pets. I understand as an adult that providing proper care for them can be pricey.
I see on social media that parents expect their children to assume full responsibility for their dogs when they give them as a gift. The majority of the time, the parents have to take up the duty of care since the youngster either loses interest in or ignores the dog's upkeep. I can personally attest to the fact that owning a dog can be costly. Even though it can be an expensive business, I notice a lot of people who wish to breed dogs in order to make quick money. An emergency like a cesarean section might happen at any time. They're not cheap! I have personal experience with it, so trust me. In addition to the costs associated with seeing the veterinarian, you also have to worry about certain doctors' bias and prejudice against certain breeds of dogs. Yes, I agree; that's really strange. I've personally witnessed it.
Where are the costs encountered? Vaccinations are required for dogs and are not free. You must take them to the veterinarian's office if they have an unknown illness. Just be mindful that they cost as much as a normal doctor's appointment.
Not to mention the price, allergies, and issues with dog food (frequent recalls). The constant replacement of high-quality dog food due to a lot of videos online showing the horrifying consequences of dog treats and pebbles causing fatal reactions.
Many people treat their dogs as members of their family, and some even consider them to be children. Some of them spend large sums of money on providing for them, including exquisite clothes and nutritious food.
I watch videos of people abandoning dogs because they were too big or because they didn't want to deal with the responsibility of caring for a pet. It truly is heartbreaking. When then, breeders discard them by abandoning them by the side of the road since their breeding program can no longer use them. This conduct strikes me as terrible and heartless.
If you're not up to the responsibilities, don't take on the duty of caregiver for a dog or any other animal. It's not something you should do just because you think it's cute or because someone else is doing it. There's no need to let the animal suffer because you were unaware of all the obligations that come with owning a pet.
I've come to understand how unconditionally my dogs love me and that their feelings for me never change, even on bad days. It's a bonus for them when you show them love and then present them with a treat.
The holidays are quickly approaching, so reconsider giving your children a pet and make sure the one who gets it is prepared for all the responsibilities that go along with owning a dog.
