The Sweet Hook-Up Had Me Hooked—Until I Took a Bite, My Honest Review

Who doesn’t love overpriced fair food? I was super excited and had been trying to catch up with The Sweet Hook-Up: A Taste of the Fair Food truck. I love a funnel cake and usually only get one once or twice a year, so I decided to grab a little bit of everything for a full taste test. Unfortunately, my excitement didn’t quite match the reality when it came to the food or the wait time. The customer service, however, was really good. The young lady who handed me my food did her best to bag everything neatly, even though some items came in open bowls like you’d find at a fair.

Here’s what I ordered: a three-count fried Oreo for $5, candied grapes for $5, a Polish sausage with ketchup, mustard, onions, and bell peppers with fries for around $10, a funnel cake for $10, and a hamburger for about $6–$7. I didn’t receive a receipt, but my total was $44. The wait time was over twenty minutes, and since there was no buzzer system, I had to either stand by the truck or walk back and forth to check on my order. It was pretty warm outside, but manageable. If you’re driving solo like I was, I’d recommend bringing someone with you to help carry everything.

Once I got home, my kids and I grabbed plates and tried a little bit of everything. We started with the funnel cake, and we all loved it—it was sweet, crispy, and just the right amount of powdered sugar. Next, we tried the fried Oreos, but unfortunately, they were a bit gritty and didn’t have that gooey richness we were hoping for. The hamburger was bland and reminded me of the frozen patties we used to get from Walmart. While the bun and toppings were fresh, the patty itself was too thick and lacked flavor/seasoning.

We moved on to the Polish sausage and fries. I’ll give them credit for not being stingy with the onions and bell peppers, but the sausage casing was tough, and I only enjoyed the inside. The fries looked crunchy and seasoned, but they didn’t deliver on texture or taste. Finally, we tried the candied grapes. I was curious about them since they’ve gone viral online. They were definitely pretty and eye-catching, but not something I’d rush to try again.

This was my personal experience, and I’ve seen plenty of great reviews from others online. Maybe yours will be one of those. The Sweet Hook-Up definitely has visual appeal, and the funnel cake alone made the trip worth it. If you’ve tried them, I’d love to hear about your experience—feel free to drop me an email and let me know what you thought.
