Rude for No Reason: Why I’m Choosing Peace Over Pettiness

Have you ever walked into a place of business, called a doctor’s office, or emailed an HOA manager, and been met with rudeness, dismissal, or just plain indifference? On the flip side, maybe you’ve encountered someone who actually knows how to speak with kindness and professionalism—and it made all the difference.

I often ask myself: Why do managers and business owners hire people like this for customer-facing roles? Why place someone without basic people skills at the front line of your business? Being kind doesn’t cost a dime, and it sure doesn’t require a college degree or certificate.

I was telling my kids recently that I used to give people a pass when they spoke to me rudely or responded with attitude. I’d say, “Maybe they don’t know what they’re doing.” But God has been working on me—teaching me that not every action deserves a reaction. Some people are just miserable, and they take it out on others. Sometimes, it’s deeper than that. Sometimes, it’s spiritual.

Day by day, I’m learning to ignore the ignorance of people who don’t deserve my energy or time. Take it from me—it’s not worth giving attitude the time of day. I used to be big on emails and reviews (and I still am), but I’m TRYING to learn that sometimes, silence is the best response. Now, I won’t sit here and lie—I might still send a complaint email or two—but I’m working on doing better.

One thing I cannot stand is rude customer service—especially when I’ve paid my money. I remember working at a job where people were just rude for no reason. Every day, I’d reflect on how I never wanted to be that kind of person. I made a promise to myself: I will not be ugly to anyone for no reason.

Because here’s the truth—unwarranted attitudes can ruin someone’s day, someone’s spirit, or even someone’s life. And I refuse to be part of that.
